Still, from her time as a senior member of the British royal family to her As Ever era , one element of her style has remained constant — her tributes to Princess Diana .
Over the past eight years, the Duchess of Sussex has honored Princess Diana by accessorizing with pieces of jewelry previously owned by her late mother-in-law. Off the heels of Markle’s recent sentimental jewelry statement in Princess Diana’s butterfly earrings , WWD breaks down some of those moments and jewelry pieces ahead.

Meghan Markle's Recent Red Carpet Moment Included a Subtle Nod to Princess Diana
Last Friday night, Markle was joined by her husband Prince Harry for the David Foster Foundation 40th Anniversary Celebration in Victoria, British Columbia. The Duchess of Sussex accessorized her Greta Constantine asymmetrical neckline black dress with Princess Diana’s sapphire-and-diamond butterfly earrings.

Coincidentally, Diana also wore the earrings while visiting British Columbia in 1986. The butterfly earrings coordinate with a necklace, creating a suite of butterfly-inspired jewelry. While Friday was Markle’s most recent occasion wearing the earrings, she also wore them during her first tour of Australia in October 2018, after her wedding to Prince Harry.
Following their May 2018 wedding reception at Frogmore House in Windsor, Markle was spotted sporting Princess Diana’s memorable aquamarine cocktail ring. The ring served as the ideal statement accessory for the newly minted Duchess of Sussex’s reception dress — a white halter gown by Stella McCartney.
Diana’s aquamarine ring was a gift from Lucia Flecha de Lima and became part of the royal’s suite of jewels in 1996. Just months before her untimely death, she paired the ring with Catherine Walker cocktail dress for a Christie’s pre-auction party in London in June 1997.
During her October 2018 trip to Australia with Prince Harry, Markle also sported a gold cuff bracelet that previously belonged to Princess Diana. An understated piece, the delicate bracelet included blue carbon stones and a gold band. The bracelet was reportedly a gift Prince Harry gave his wife to celebrate her first pregnancy.
The gold cuff bracelet is among Princess Diana’s more delicate and understated pieces. She coordinated the bracelet with a pearl set while out at the Alfred Dunhill shop in Mayfair in May 1994.
During her time as a senior member of the British royal family, Markle also wore Princess Diana’s diamond tennis bracelet. The delicate piece was first worn by the Duchess of Sussex for the Fiji state dinner in October 2018 and resurfaced again in March 2019 at the Commonwealth Day service when Markle was pregnant with Prince Archie.
Princess Diana often wore the bracelet in the years prior to her 1997 death, including for an American Red Cross gala dinner. The bracelet, reportedly by Cartier, also served as a likely inspiration for Prince Harry to use diamonds from his late mother’s collection to create Markle’s engagement ring.
The Cartier gold tank Française watch has become a signature part of Markle’s accessories. The Duchess of Sussex regularly wears the bracelet, last seen in public at a screening for the documentary film “Cookie Queens,” which Markle and Prince Harry executive produced. She also wore it with her bold white suit at the Invictus Games The Hague in April 2022.
The watch was also worn by Princess Diana on several occasions, including a visit to the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple in London.
