High-profile trials have fascinated the public for more than 130 years with supporters and skeptics sizing up the accused's clothing with great scrutiny.

With jury selection for his manslaughter trial scheduled to start next month, Luigi Mangione attended a status conference Tuesday morning in a Manhattan state court. Accused of killing UnitedHealthcare chief executive officer Brian Thompson in 2024 outside of a New York City hotel, Mangione has pleaded not guilty.

The 28-year-old wore a gray suit and slightly unbuttoned white shirt for the appearance, which is expected to be his final public sighting before jury selection gets underway on Sept. 8. Last week a federal judge granted a request by Mangione’s legal team to allow him to wear civilian clothes — a suit, shirt, socks and shoes without laces. As with other high-profile court cases, Mangione’s courtroom attire has led to much scrutiny.

Walmart Is Being Sued For Allegedly Keeping Voiceprints When Shoppers Call

Anna Delvey, who was dubbed “the fake heiress” after her 2017 arrest for swindling hotels, banks and acquaintances, understands just how glaring such attention can be. The Russian-born German citizen’s style was critiqued online and,in the media during her 2019 trial, in which she was convicted of eight charges, including grand larceny in the first degree and theft of services. Describing the public’s interest in Mangione’s clothes as “kind of humorous, because his [alleged] crime was severe,” Delvey said, “Discussing his fashion is a way to be part of the conversation without going into the details or pass judgment. A lot of people just don’t want to read the dockets,” she said.

The focus on Mangione’s clothing is “refreshing, since he is a man and usually women are being scrutinized,” according to Delvey. Noting how Mangione has said very little so far during his courthouse outings, Delvey suggested that the only way for anyone to “project his feelings and attitude is through his closet choices.” Comparing such armchair analysis to pseudo-science phrenology that measured mental faculties based on the shape of the skull, Delvey said, “I just don’t think it means as much as it does.”

Yet even in 1893, onlookers at the trial of Lizzie Borden, who was accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an ax, zeroed in on her clothing, expressions and even how she used her fan. And a Boston Daily Globe reporter wrote at that time that Borden’s courtroom dress fit “perfectly, as if she had been measured for it in Paris, but it was of a very old fashion.” Borden, a refined middle-class 32-year-old, was acquitted by an all-male jury.

Spiffing up for court appearances is a well-engrained strategy for celebrities and civilians. For his felony assault trial in Los Angeles last year, A$AP Rocky tapped stylist Matthew Henson to find 20 tailored looks including Saint Laurent suits for his days in court. The “Fashion Killa” rapper, who was acquitted, told Elle magazine last fall, “I didn’t want to look too formal or tacky. If somebody asks you to come to court, regardless of what the affair is for, you better show up with some integrity, and that’s all I did. I got dressed.”

“Very surprised” by how Mangione’s courtroom looks are being scrutinized, Instagram influencer “Preppy Pete” said, “The wardrobe is very traditional, but everybody is sensationalizing it. The loafers without socks — this is traditional Ivy League prep, right? I just think it’s been blown out of proportion.”

Mangione’s style choices have also translated on the sales front. After TikTok videos suggested that the maroon crewneck sweater he wore in December 2024 for a Manhattan courtroom appearance was from Maison Margiela, a similar $1,000 style sold out on ssense .com. Later, others linked the look to a $62 washable merino wool version from Nordstrom, which also then sold out. Neither company responded to media requests at that time.

“There’s nothing flashy about what he’s doing. It’s rooted in traditional menswear. He’s very deliberate about how he presents himself in the courtroom. He is very intentionally restrained,” Preppy Pete said.

Speculating that Mangione may not be selecting his attire, Delvey noted that his clothes often don’t appear to fit well. Speaking of her own trial in hindsight, she said she would not have chosen some of the styles that she sported at her trial, given the choice. Delvey said her stylist didn’t have her measurements to work with and that wearing certain colors was not allowed.

Noting how the media can turn legal proceedings into fashion runways depending on the defendant’s social status, Hedi Nasheri, professor of global security and criminology at Kent State University, said the concept is far from new. Given Mangione’s Ivy League background, the media and the public is infatuated and romanticizes his appearances and his attire. “American culture has a history of romanticizing those that challenge authority,” she said.

Mangione’s case has attracted supporters like The Mangionistas and Status 4 Lulu. Some are showing their solidarity by wearing screen-printed T-shirts with an image of Mangione’s face and “Free Luigi.” Bill Wyatt, owner of Y-Que Trading Post in Los Angeles, singled out the $25 “But Daddy, I Love Him” T-shirt, which is imprinted with an image of Mangione behind bars and surrounded by a barbed-wire heart, as his store’s current bestseller.

As a forerunner in selling courtroom-inspired merchandise, Wyatt’s profile skyrocketed after designing the “Free Winona” T-shirt imprinted with Winona Ryder’s face that Ryder wore for a W magazine cover in June 2002. The year prior, the actress was arrested for shoplifting $5,500 worth of merchandise from a Saks Fifth Avenue store in Beverly Hills. After what was a highly watched trial in Los Angeles in 2002, Ryder was convicted of grand theft and vandalism.

“Some celebrities get support no matter what their infractions are,” Wyatt said. Suggesting that some of the interest in Mangione is as an anti-corporate corruption figure, he added the upcoming trial has “given us the chance to continue the conversation about what he’s been accused of and the social ramifications of celebrities [whether that be by profession or default].” More generally speaking, high-profile trials provide a chance for people to ogle, according to Wyatt. “It’s [a matter of] ‘Oh my God, what did they do?’ Then they get to look into celebrities’ lives,” he said.

Ginnie Whitehouse, professor of multimedia journalism at Eastern Kentucky University, noted how the fresh flower Oscar Wilde wore in the lapel of his well-tailored jackets made the news, during his 1895 trial for gross indecency. “A physically attractive, well-dressed person accused of a crime makes engaging copy and an eye-catching image. Luigi Mangione’s jacket is just the latest example,” she said. “What’s different is that AI can put his visage more-or-less realistically on a T-shirt or on a Batman suit.”

Last year, Shein came under fire after what appeared to be Mangione’s likeness modeling a Shein button-down appeared on the fast-fashion site. The platform took it down and Shein said it was conducting an investigation.
