Chinese AI Chatbots Begin Charging for the Transactions They Generate

Alibaba opened its Qwen app to third-party service agents on the same day ByteDance started applying a higher commission to hotel bookings that originate inside Doubao. Both moves mark a clear turn from free conversation toward transaction-based revenue.

本条来自 钛媒体(Business / 科技商业),聚焦 consumer。 NextFin News — Consumer AI assistants in China spent their first years competing on usefulness and scale. They answered questions, wrote drafts, booked tickets and ordered food, usually without charging the user directly. The products attracted large audiences. The servers that powered them ran up large bills. By mid-2026 the industry’s focus had shifted from growth at any cost to finding ways to pay for that growth. Two developments on August 10 illustrated the new priority. Alibaba launched an open platform inside its Qwen application. Outside companies can now build agents that live inside the chat interface on phones, computers and AI glasses. A user can summon a logistics service, a rental listing or a fund product by mentioning it in conversation or tapping a marker on the screen. The first partners include SF Express, the apartment platform Ziroom, Hello Bike, Midea’s home-appliance service and several others, along with Alibaba’s own logistics and productivity tools. The design keeps the entire process—query, recommendation, booking and payment—inside one window. On the same day, reports confirmed that ByteDance’s Doubao had begun applying a distinct fee to hotel reservations that start in its chat and finish on the affiliated Douyin local-services marketplace. The combined charge is about 12 percent: 11.4 percent software service fee plus 0.6 percent payment handling. Previously those orders had been treated as ordinary platform traffic and settled at roughly 8 percent. Doubao has stated that merchants cannot pay for better placement or recommendations; the fee is collected only after a booking is completed. The two announcements share a single commercial idea. A conversation that reveals clear purchase intent is being treated as a high-value traffic source. Platforms that can turn that intent into a finished transaction are starting to price the channel accordingly. For merchants the arithmetic is less straightforward. Many already pay commissions to established travel sites, delivery platforms and social-commerce channels. Adding another AI entry point means another technical connection and another fee schedule. The decisive question is whether the new orders are truly additional or simply redirected from existing sources. If they are incremental, the higher rate may be acceptable. If they are not, margin shrinks without any gain in volume. Operators say the evidence is still incomplete and will depend on measured conversion rather than headline user counts.

NextFin News — Consumer AI assistants in China spent their first years competing on usefulness and scale. If they are not, margin shrinks without any gain in volume. Operators say the evidence is still incomplete and will depend on measured conversion rather than headline user counts.

Cost pressure explains the timing. Running a popular AI assistant at national scale requires large amounts of computing capacity. Daily active users in the tens of millions translate into daily expenses measured in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Subscription conversion remains low. Advertising experiments are still early. Transaction commissions, by contrast, rise automatically with completed business and require no change in how people already use the product. Open platforms also recreate competitive patterns familiar from earlier internet cycles. When several assistants offer overlapping booking and service agents, advantage shifts from model performance to the strength of the merchant network and the smoothness of the payment path. Exclusive deals, preferential ranking and different fee rates become the main tools. Past platform contests often began with generous terms for suppliers and ended with higher take rates once traffic was secured. At the same time, the appearance of multiple similar platforms creates practical friction. Users do not need a dozen nearly identical assistants. Merchants do not need a dozen parallel integrations and a dozen separate settlement statements. Resources spent on redundant entry points are resources not spent on better models or better services. The August moves do not settle these issues. They simply show that major Chinese consumer AI products have begun to treat conversation as a billable distribution layer. Whether the resulting systems create genuine new demand or merely redistribute existing transactions will decide how lasting the model becomes. For the moment, the free phase of AI assistance is yielding to a more conventional form of platform economics—one counted in commission percentages rather than daily active users alone. 更多精彩内容,关注钛媒体微信号(ID:taimeiti),或者下载钛媒体App
