“This Is Ann” marks the KnitWell Group retailer’s first major integrated campaign since 2017 and follows other efforts to foster a stronger fan community.
Ann Taylor wants to break reductive stereotypes around corporate women with its first substantial marketing campaign in years, part of a larger revamp for the retailer owned by KnitWell Group. Privately held KnitWell, a holding company that formed three years ago this month, also markets Loft, Talbots and Chico’s.
Founded in 1954, Ann Taylor started off the 2020s contending with plunging sales and the bankruptcy of its then-parent Ascension Retail Group. It is now looking to reconnect with existing customers while extending to a new audience of career-minded shoppers. The last time Ann Taylor ran a campaign of this scale was in 2017, a spokesperson said.
“This Is Ann,” which was developed in-house, follows women who juggle busy jobs, social lives and family duties without losing their sense of confidence or personal style. Ads shot around the Upper West Side and Central Park were helmed by photographer and director Dan Martensen and videographer Garrett Hardy Davis and show off a fall collection carrying sharply cut blazers, silk scarves and tailored separates.
“This Is Ann marks a new chapter for Ann Taylor, celebrating the woman at the center of our brand — confident, stylish and moving seamlessly through every part of her busy life,” Ann Taylor Executive Vice President and Chief Merchandising Officer Heather Gruccio said in a statement. “The campaign and our fall collection is a reflection of what the brand is today, a brand for the modern woman and her multidimensional life.”
The seasonal campaign follows other initiatives from Ann Taylor that seek to foster a stronger community among fans of the brand. In February, Ann Taylor debuted a Substack , The Desk, that publishes content sharing career and style advice. Other retailers are exploring newsletters as a way to drive consumer engagement in channels outside of crowded social media apps and to stand out on artificial intelligence chatbots that scrape forums and editorial sites to answer user queries.
Other heritage fashion brands have found success by switching up their marketing and angling messaging at younger crowds. Coach, for example, has won over Gen Z consumers in recent years with a creator-heavy strategy .
Along with The Desk, Ann Taylor is extending its Style 101 digital video series that asks fashion experts for advice on developing a versatile wardrobe. “This Is Ann” will also have a presence at New York Fashion Week, where Ann Taylor will run an experiential activation in the SoHo neighborhood. The space will feature campaign imagery, a street cart and a newsstand stocked with “This Is Ann” editorial materials, including magalogs, post cards and custom-wrapped issues of fashion publication Daily Front Row.
Looking beyond the fall window, Ann Taylor plans to roll out a brand ambassador program in early 2027 that spotlights “authentic voices of the women who love and wear the brand,” the press release said. The program will focus on social media.
